Favorite Photo Related Schtuff 2

Monday, March 7th, 2011

Currently I’m sitting in my office typing away as my 14 week old puppy Olive is happily snoring away…with her head propped on one of my gear bags. This makes me happy for a couple reasons, 1. I know she isn’t currently making a mess, emphasis on currently… and 2. I don’t feel guilty for not playing with her while I work. Those little puppy eyes staring up at you saying, ‘Why won’t you play with me? What you don’t love me anymore?’ -  Insert guilt here.

But what I’d really like to share with you today is another installment of some of my favorite photography related stuff…err…schtuff I mean :)

Nick Onken
Nick is a commercial photographer that I stumbled across while surfing online a few years ago. His images are so full of life and break all the rules. Nick is able to use really intense/harsh lighting conditions and harnesses that energy to create a unique, emotion filled image that very, very few people could pull off. He also writes a great blog about his success/failures as a commercial photographer. You can view his online portfolio here – nickonken.com

Mr. Villa is a genius to me. He captures so much atmosphere, emotion and ethereal lighting in his images. Every time I see something of his I am blown away at his take on wedding photography. And he is also one of the few who still shoot – film. You can view his website here, josevillaphoto.com  Also, be sure to check out his blog for all his latest photo shoots.

Favorite Business Books

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

I admit it… I am not an avid reader, but when I do it is often business related.

OooooOOoohhh…I’m that exciting. And just to be really thrilling I’ll be taking up knitting…. yawn.

All kidding aside… There are a TON of business books out there, but today I’d like to review three of my faves.

Lovemarks The Future Beyond Brands

1. Lovemarks – The Future Beyond Brands by Kevin Roberts

- This book was recommended by Justin & Mary Marantz and it is by far the best book on branding I have read. Lovemarks, shows what great companies are doing to create, ‘Loyalty Beyond Reason.’ It’s about how brands make us feel about ourselves. Case in point… I will drive 2 hours away to shop at Anthropologie because I love the way it makes me feel when I shop there. And that right there is, ‘Loyalty Beyond Reason.’ The book is thoughtfully designed as well, with illustrations and conversational dialogue. It isn’t your typical business book. If you are looking to create a unique brand that focuses on building a real relationship with your client, one that evokes pure joy and happiness in your client, I strongly recommend this one.

2. The E Myth Revisited by Michael E. Gerber

- This book has been around awhile and is on quite a few must read lists. The E Myth Revisited to quote their summary… “Dispels the myths about starting your own business.” The book goes through the struggles of a couple business owners stories and how they either saved their business or further ran it into the ground. Between each story the author teaches you the basics of creating a successful business that not only runs well, but runs itself. The book can be a bit dry at points but totally worth the read.

3. The Ultimate Question by Fred Reichheld

-This book teaches the reader the differences between ‘good profits’ and ‘bad profits’. Bad profits? Is there such a thing… you betcha, and if you want to stay in business for the long haul it’s a good one to learn. It also attempts to measure the best marketing tool on Earth, ‘word of mouth.’ But the main point of the book is creating, ‘word of mouth’ through ‘promoters.’ The book has a bunch of great principles on excellent customer service, of going above and beyond in creating, ‘promoters’ – clients who genuinely love what you do and can’t stop telling their friends. To be honest the book is REALLY dry…and I HAD to switch to the audio version, it was so bad, EEP! So, if there was a cliffnotes version of this book I would totally recommend it.

Has anyone read any of the 3 books mentioned? I would love to hear your feedback or if you have any recommendations?
