Lightroom Workshop!!!

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

I love Lightroom. That statement almost sounds like ‘I love lamp’ from a favorite movie of mine…but honestly…I LOVE Lightroom! Lightroom changed my life. And that statement sounds a bit dramatic, but honestly…when I was spending eons of time editing in adobe bridge…GASP! Or opening an image 1 by 1 in Photoshop…Took forever.

Then I met my friend Lightroom and all was well with the world. This program is FAST. It allowed me to cut my editing time down tremendously. It’s quick, easy and quite the powerful program.

On Wednesday, February 22nd at 6:00pm, here in Chico myself and Brent Holland are teaching a Lightroom Workshop!! The class is 3 hours long and is all hands on training. You follow along on your laptop as we teach, working on your own photos. This class is great for beginners and more advanced attendees as well. Annnnnddd you can grab your seat for – $99! But hurry space is limited.

Photography Workshops : Recap

Wednesday, July 27th, 2011

When I think about working with the amazing students who came to our photography workshops I become overwhelmed with excitement and joy. It was an absolute pleasure to see them go from listening to our lecture (and attempted failed comic relief on my part) to putting it into action with our fabulous model Allison. Oh…and it was so hot that day. Which is quite typical for sunny Chico, Ca. And despite the heat – they rocked it. They took all our challenges of shooting in the most extreme lighting conditions and came back with some fantastic images.

To everyone who came to our workshops – from the bottom of my heart – Thank you. You inspire me :)

A favorite image of the day of our lovely model Allison. We made poor Allison do a hair flip what seemed like 16 different times to get the perfect image.

Brent and I will be doing another round of Photography Workshops!! Dates and new workshops will be announced on the blog, facebook and twitter in the coming weeks. Also…I would LOVE to hear your thoughts on types of workshops you would like to see us teach! Please leave a comment below :)

Thank you soooo much to everyone who entered and facebook’d, tweeted about the contest and sale…The good news is the sale is still running over the weekend :)

Now I’d like to switch gears and talk about a recent announcement from the American Medical Association declaring Photoshop (and any other photo editing software) bad for your health…

“We must stop exposing impressionable children and teenagers to advertisements portraying models with body types only attainable with the help of photo editing software,” said AMA board member Barbara McAneny.

The AMA cited an altered photograph of Kim Kardashian, see below, that artificially thinned her legs down.

Kim Kardashian : Before and After Photoshop

You can read the full article about the American Medical Association findings and more altered photos – here.

As a photographer I can understand both sides of this argument. The advertiser, celebrity or model want the best possible and most flattering image, because honestly who wants photos of themselves with acne, bags under the eyes or stretch marks? I certainly wouldn’t in fact, I am quite guilty of retouching my own photos of myself to remove acne. And I can understand the ethics of exposing young girls to images of body types that don’t exist. But where is the line of how far is too far? Like this image below -

Ralph Lauren Ad

The models head is larger than her waist…and honestly is kinda comical :)

So what are your thoughts and opinions? How far is too far? Should there be ZERO alterations of photos? Some? Or all out fiction? Leave a comment below, I would love to hear your thoughts!

Kelsey : A modeling shoot

Monday, February 28th, 2011

After many emails of trying to get schedules lined up to make a fun, just because, model photo shoot happen with fellow photographer, Greyson Collins (whose wedding I shot last Fall you can check out – here) it finally happened.

And by some miracle it didn’t rain/snow/hail on the one day we could all shoot on. Insert happy dance :)

Our model for the day was the lovely, Kelsey, who is not only beautiful but charming and down right hilarious. Oh, and when she’s not being a gorgeous model you can find her -  saving lives! As she is an EMT here in Chico.

This shoot was an absolute blast and I owe it to Kelsey and Greyson. So thank you both for being so awesome :)

Originally, I had planned when the light was just right to shoot in a random field North of Chico on HWY99, however, we arrived a tad early and the light was just, meh. So we turned around and headed back to a gorgeous almond orchard that Greyson had spotted as we were driving. And as I was shooting I just about died at how gorgeous the light was. Like butter! Said with my best impression of the SNL skit, Coffe Talk.
