Welcome to another installment of Thank Goodness it’s Foto Friday…Today I will be discussing a new little gadget that I have fallen in love with – handheld LED video light.
A Dilemma…
For awhile I had been looking for options when photographing in low light situations, like at a wedding reception. My portable studio lighting kit is fantastic at creating dimensional unique lighting at receptions…however, they require set up time, can’t be moved in a snap and can sometimes just get in the way. Although on-camera flash is portable it is however…something I am not a fan of…it is harsh and creates a flat looking image.
A Solution…
After seeing a handheld LED video light in action while second shooting for the talented Denise Bovee it pretty much sealed the deal that I needed to have one. Soft, yet directional (depending on how you or your assistant holds it) …it was exactly what I was looking for.
Pros – Fantastic, quality of light. Lightweight. Easily portable and fits in my Shootsac nicely.
Cons – It is not as powerful as my strobes. You may need an assistant to hold it off camera, but if that is not an option it will mount onto any standard light stand.
Saturday was the first time I as able to use my new friend and below is an example of what this little light is capable of. I had my lovely assistant Julie hold the light above my couple while standing just off to my left to create directional lighting. The background is being lit from white string lights hanging in the tree and other ambient light sources.

Ron Putnam - Thanks for the post Shannon. I’ve been looking at these things and have yet to try one out first hand, so what you’ve shown makes it look like a great video light to have. Also I like the thought that it’s less expensive and not scorching hot like traditional video lights. Great post.
Bria - Love it! These shots are beautiful and only confirm that I need to find myself a video light. I’ve always liked shooting with video lights and they allow you to get the beautiful ambient background that strobes tend to wash out. Thanks for sharing!
admin - Thanks Ron! I’m glad I could help
