What is photography…

Monday, March 14th, 2011

Last week I posed a question on Facebook and Twitter because that is where one goes for deep meaningful answers, right? But seriously, I am fascinated with how each person answers this question … ‘What is photography?’

I got a lot of great responses:

“Ones self expression. Beautiful!” – Tanya

“Visual memories preserved.” – Paige

“My passion.” – Ricki

And one that just made me laugh from my good friend John…”A type of pastry?” :)

“My dream job.” – Rochelle

“An art that we seek to document the small bits of life that make memories last!” – Reece

“An addiction” “Therapy” – Greyson

And then I realized I didn’t answer the question myself and that it was probably best that I didn’t go off on a long winded dialogue as a Facebook status update. I’m pretty sure I would be instantly de-friended.

But I digress :)

Photography is so many things to me. It is a way that I express myself and relate to the world. People have told me before traveling somewhere to NOT photograph that I will enjoy it more. That I will be missing out. It is the EXACT opposite for me. I enjoy so much by placing myself in my surroundings via my camera. I see so many more details when I am making pictures than when I am not.

Photography is an appreciation of life and the little things.

It’s something that I just can’t stop doing.

Photography makes me feel more connected. To a place. To people. To life.

A Rosan Family Tradition: Sarma

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

A wintry Sunday. The sort of Sunday just asking for a warm hearty meal. Milan and I took a short trip up to his parents house to make a family favorite, sarma. Sarma is cabbage leaves filled with a mixture of pork, beef, rice and sauteed veggies, boiled and served with bread to soak up the delicious broth. Sarma is common to many Eastern European countries with slight variations to the recipe. It is a hearty meal and is best shared with family and friends. The preparation is fun as it gets many involved and lends itself for Mike to tell stories. Stories of him growing up in Brooklyn, NY during the great depression. Stories of family, of hard times, of humor and of tears. Stories from one man’s life that could easily be stories from many lifetimes.

Good food, great family, a simple Sunday filled with memories.
